Private Trout Ponds
There is something particular about fishing water that belongs to no one but you. No other lines in the water. No voice carrying from the next bank. Just the early light on the surface and whatever is moving underneath it.
Dove Cabin's private trout ponds sit within the 110-acre property — stocked and maintained, available exclusively to guests. No day-trippers, no fishing licenses required on private water in Virginia, no one to share the experience with unless you choose to.
The ponds hold trout through the season. A fly rod works well here, particularly in the early morning when the light is low and the surface is undisturbed. Those who prefer a simpler setup will find that works equally well. The point is the experience of private water on a historic property, not the technique.
The surrounding land — mature hardwood forest, open meadow, the sounds of the property at dawn — frames the ponds in a way that makes the act of fishing feel unhurried in a way it rarely does on public water.
Most guests who fish here do so in the morning, before the day's other plans take shape. Others make an afternoon of it, returning to the cabin with enough quiet in them to properly appreciate the evening.
