Virginia Wine Country
Wine Country, Without the Drive Home
One of the quiet pleasures of staying at Dove Cabin is that the Virginia wine country isn't a day trip — it's your backyard. The Monticello Wine Trail runs through this part of the Piedmont, and the wineries along it represent some of the most accomplished viticulture on the East Coast. You can spend a morning at one, an afternoon at another, and be back at the cabin by evening with no highway involved.
Keswick Vineyards
The closest major winery to Dove Cabin, Keswick sits on the historic Edgewood Estate about 15 minutes east of Charlottesville on Route 231. The family-owned estate has earned two Virginia Governor's Cups and consistent gold medals for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier. The tasting room opens onto the barrel room — you're tasting wine in the same building where it was made. On Saturdays, there's live music.
What sets Keswick apart is a philosophy of minimal intervention — reds are unfiltered, the winemaking is patient, and the wines taste like they came from a specific piece of Virginia soil. Because they did.

Barboursville Vineyards
Barboursville is the closest thing Virginia has to a grand estate winery. The grounds were designed by Thomas Jefferson for his friend Governor James Barbour, and the ruins of Jefferson's mansion still anchor the landscape — a graceful brick skeleton surrounded by working vineyards.
The wine program, led by winemaker Luca Paschina, is consistently among Virginia's finest. The flagship Octagon — a Bordeaux-style blend — has been served to heads of state and won the 2025 Virginia Governor's Cup. The Palladio Restaurant on premises serves fine Italian cuisine; if you're planning a special dinner, reserve a table before you arrive.

King Family Vineyards
In Crozet, against a backdrop of the Blue Ridge at its most dramatic, King Family Vineyards has built something that guests return to every season. The wines — particularly the Mountain Plains Red and the estate Meritage — are made from fruit grown at the foot of the mountains. On Sunday afternoons from May through October, polo matches take place on the property grounds. It's a scene unlike anything else in Virginia wine country.

Early Mountain Vineyards
Up in Madison, Early Mountain earned the title of Best Tasting Room in the country — and the space bears it out. Light-filled, thoughtfully designed, with food that's more than an afterthought. The wines are approachable and well-made. It's a good first stop for guests new to Virginia wine, and a reliable favorite for those who've been coming for years.
The surrounding area around Madison is worth exploring on its own — farmland, small towns, and the Rapidan River nearby.

Planning Your Day
A single day can reasonably take in two wineries without feeling rushed. Three is possible if you're efficient; four is a commitment. Most guests find that one winery in the late morning and another in the early afternoon — with a stop at The Market at Grelen for lunch in between — makes for a nearly perfect day in the Piedmont.
We're happy to suggest a sequence based on what you're after. Ask when you book.
